Sudan conflict could result in Red Sea Russian naval base!?
Sudan Update. For those who have no idea what’s going on there is a civil war. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan leader of SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces) is fighting Hemedti (Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo) the leader of the RSF (Rapid Support Forces). It has lasted years and it has been horrible. Many civilians have died and famine is striking the entire country.
Both leaders refused peace talks in Switzerland although Hemedti at least had telephone contact. You can think of it as south west vs north east even though the line isn’t that clean. The peace talks went on with just the mediators and they decided to at least tackle the famine. So there will be 2 aid routes. One route in the east (port of Sudan on the Red Sea, SAF) and a route on the Adre border crossing (borders Chad, RSF).
The UAE is financing the RSF to get Sudan’s gold. The RSF uses this to invade SAF territory in Sudan. Everyone pretends this is invisible and that’s why the fighting never ends.
The weapons are from black markets but you’re correct that’s also the UAE and Libya but the UAE allows Hemedti and his brothers bank accounts and other financial instruments inside the UAE so that they are also getting a share of the gold profits. If you want specifics it’s Al-Fakher Advanced Works Co. Ltd and Al Khaleej Bank Company, Ltd. (Both 🔔 shocking I know)
The other side is using Zadna International Co for Development Ltd. Recently under Taha
Hussein Yousef not to be confused with Taha Hussein (the Egyptian writer who went blind). SAF has received some military support from Egypt mostly to prevent Sudan from falling apart and the refugees flooding into Egypt.
I’ll tell you what I think is going to happen. As the RSF continues to advance and they have been slowly. The SAF will use is largest leverage. Red Sea access. Mikhail Bogdanov of Russia met with SAF officials last month about a Russian naval base in the Port of Sudan. They will get the best price and deal for this as Sudan has little other choice than to negotiate that for support fighting the RSF. Ali Bagheri Kani (deputy pm of Iran) also supported this deal. At first it seemed like Sudan started flirting this offer back in April as just a means of getting the US to counter offer them something better and force the UAE out of the picture. But the US stupidly dropped the ball. The US no longer has statesmen, it has equity hires. So now it seems OK fine Russia is going to get a base on the Red Sea. Yemen and Iran will be delighted.
Probably and this is all imo, Russia will conclude the global BRISC summit in October and one of the goals in bilateral transactions in local currencies or loans from BRICS currencies, and that circumvents using US dollars. Putting a naval base in Sudan would be a great starting project.
Sudan announced in June they were committed to allowing a naval base.
