Because of the incentives it gets even the disenchanted voters a reason to vote and they are normally against the two major parties and vote green’s or for an independent. That is what I find interesting about compulsory voting, I guess it’s like (democracy by force) as dicktater would agree.

The real question I was interested in was, how do Americans think the outcome of the US election 2012 would turn out IF the compulsory voting system was in place?

The fine they have in Australia seems reasonable, only I think it should be lower and the person's income level be taken into account.
Chill out dicktater I just got off the phone with the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission) and asked what happens when you don't pay the $50 fine, the lady said it just stays there on your name, no further action is taken. I'm glad you freaked out like that or I wouldn't have made the call, I actually thought a court summons was the next step.

It would be interesting to see the results of these kind of rules on one major US election.
That's what I was thinking, cosidering the US voting block consists mainly of tribalist idiots maybe a small incentive would get those lazy young Americans to switch off there Xbox and go vote this Ron Paul guy their friends have been talking about.

Yes. On the back of the infringement notice they send you it has a 'reason for not voting' section which almost any excuse is accepted. When I called the AEC to ask if I would be put in a cage if I don't pay the $50 fine the lady on the phone was startled, she was like what come on guy just put any excuse on the back and don't swear like fuck this shit system fuck this gov etc.

Yeah or former commie mother of mine who believes tv doesn't tell lies and voting never matters. I've tried in vain to introduce her to candidates who oppose EU and are small business owners like her but because someone else in the party has made headlines for saying something racist in their blog or are anti-abortion or whatever she shuts her ears completely and rather goes for a socialist pro spending, pro bail out yacht-owning prick who dresses expensively and talks out of his/her ass - or in other words: NationalCoalitionSocialDemocratLeftAllianceCentrePartyGreenleagueSFP (<< a rare good apple here and there but mostly morons) If you'd get fined for not voting then perhaps she would say "Wow I suppose I should start putting more thought into this."

My older sister too, though I've for a while now regarded her a lost-cause beyond repair liberal.

Dear Socialist there is no money so you can't have your nanny state. If you wat the freebies we have to end the wars. The only guy willing to do it is Ron Paul.
