Syrian army denies using cluster bombs in battle with rebels

Syria denied on Monday that it had used cluster bombs in its battle with rebels trying to overthrow President Bashar Assad, saying it did not possess such weapons.

A brief military statement carried by state television came in response to a report by Human Rights Watch which said on Sunday that government forces had dropped Russian-made cluster bombs over civilian areas.

"The Syrian Arab Army does not possess these kinds of weapons and affirms that these reports [of their use] are completely untrue," the army statement said.

Syrian rebels worried al-Qaeda co-opting revolution

ANTAKYA, Turkey – Syrian opposition activists say they are worried that Islamist terrorists are hijacking the Syrian revolution after Jordanian authorities thwarted a plot to attack targets such as the U.S. Embassy using weapons reportedly designated for Syrian rebels.

"Al-Qaeda is hijacking the revolution and diverting it from its original purpose, which was toppling the regime" of President Bashar Assad, said Abu Chin Orwa'a in Idlib province. Orwa'a is a member of the National Unity Battalion, a group fighting under the banner of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), which says it is resisting involvement by extremist foreign fighters.

"They are manipulating it by hitting the religious nerves of the people," Orwa'a
said.

Explosions at Syria's Aleppo university kills 15: group

(Reuters) - At least 15 people were killed and dozens wounded in two explosions that rocked the University of Aleppo in Syria's second largest city on Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

State television said there had been one explosion at the university, which lies in the government-controlled area, describing it as a "terrorist attack".

Rebels have used car bombs and suicide attacks in fighting government forces and attacking government-controlled areas.

Fighting between rebels and government forces has reached a stalemate in Aleppo and left the city divided. Rebels say they control more than half the province.

State television footage showed at least one body lying on the street and several cars burning.

The second explosion reported by the Observatory, a British-based opposition monitoring group, may have been caused by a burning car, but there was no independent confirmation.

One of the university buildings was damaged. The state news agency said the explosion occurred on the first day of exams.

Two Blasts Rock Aleppo University Campus

DAMASCUS, Syria—Two explosions struck the main university in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo on Tuesday, causing an unknown number of casualties, state media and antigovernment activists said.

There were conflicting reports as to what caused the blast at Aleppo University, which was in session Tuesday.

State TV said two rockets hit the university, killing students and people who had fled fighting elsewhere in recent months and taken refuge on the campus grounds. It didn't say how many people were killed, and blamed rebels for the attack.
