Japan Animals Dropping Dead (Fukushima)
Re: Japan Animals Dropping Dead (Fukushima)
Well it is both. They are dying because of neglect and neglected because of the radiation which forced the people to leave.

Re: Japan Animals Dropping Dead (Fukushima)
I read one article that said the beef cows were still doing quite well grazing. Even the dairy cows should be able to recover if they can walk. Pigs not so good if they did not have automatic feeders, hopefully the doors and fences were broken enough (by the visitors) so they could become free roamers. At some point when they become downers themselves they should be examined to determine it was not just a 'heart attack'.
In the hemp article I linked to (or one I read) it said that the hemp grown in radiated soils was still a useful product, even as clothing. ( I would research that aspect a bit more before buying help lock-straps)Farming would be similar to running an operation on the moon. Every operation done via remote once the machine was in a certain zone. (if you are looking at metal that begins to radiate.
ROV's and/or NASA style capsules that could be the shielding needed should men want to enter the zones without any danger to their own bodies for extended periods of time (like a one week shift). I'm not sure how hemp would not be emitting radiation but if it was it is still a very strong fiber and it could be rough woven into a mat that could be used in road construction where it is used to stabilize soils (in soft or hilly terrain).
What is the more popular method of filtering air for houses. I hope it is better than duct-tape and plastic.
My place has so many hole my best option would be to install an filter outside that is the connected to the cold-air intake of the forced air heating system. My place is quite small so a air cleaner off an 18 wheeler would be big enough as far as airflow, particle size might not be optimal but at least with the fan running all time the house is under a tiny bit of pressure and no dust is coming in. An even better design comes from the vehicles of the mid-50's. they were an oil bath that used motor oil and horsehair. incoming air (engine vacuum) would be drawn under the surface of the oil a few inches and the under that barrier and the upward as bubbles that would travel through the horse-hair. The air was then clear of any dust that would harm the engine. swapping in some better suited materials (suited for particle size and odor factor) that style of filter never needs replacing, only an occasion cleaning of the dust/etc.
Don't let Monsanto in or they will be patenting everything as being a new species that they created. Let's hope it's the cows and pigs that grow in size rather than the dogs, cats, birds.
If hemp did prove to be free of radiation would that become a viable replacement in building machines that currently use plastic and metals? For the number of years we have been able to grow it legally, the hoops to get all the permits and the post growing use has been very limited in my view. Any serious production numbers would require European equipment and some harvesting equipment has yet to be invented. ie in the 'old days' it was cut and 'stooked' (stood upright) rather in a windrow for that first weathering stage. Once dried the seeds and leaves and stems can be easily sorted.
Nobody would do that by hand anymore so to need a new stooking machine, on capable of handling very tall plants. cut, gather into a tight bundle, tie with dried hemp twine about 3 ft from the top (or just below where the seeds are) and then given a 'quick spin' to flair out the stems near the ground and when released by the machine the will be standing like any stook. Once dried to the right stage another yet to be built machine will come along and to the gathering of the seeds and the bundling of the stems and the leaf debris is left on the land.

Re: Japan Animals Dropping Dead (Fukushima)
I like beef but I am not eating a radiated cow. And i dont know what article you read, but the cows are dying. All the animals in that area have a death sentence. they cant let them out or return to them. They are contaminated.
And I am not using hemp from there either. I don't understand why people who like hemp go into such gross exaggerations for it. Or even to say dont worry it's only a little radio active. I dont care what the safe limits are. the number should be ZERO.

Re: Japan Animals Dropping Dead (Fukushima)
I wasn't suggesting they be sent to market, sure they die an early death and it will be the same types of injuries to internal organs that many people will die from, first signs might help in treatments, or more likely, lack of as it's terminal.
If the barns were unlocked that is all anybody can do for them. The calves will carry the same mutation radiated (human) mothers will have should they be as contaminated. Look for DU style babies, course by that time it is way past too late.
I'm trying to point out that once the radiation from the plants stop there is still the land that remains affected. It can be treated like the dairy barns, lock it up and call it a 100% right-off or try some 'new things' to speed up the recovery of the land. Perhaps one seeding and let the crops take care of reseeding for a decade or so will be of some use in being able to reuse the land full time.
Even as far as I am away if I had fields it would makes sense for me to plant hemp in one field (as a clean-up plant) and the next years plant some for mean for human consumption. (silage for dairy cows)
Nor was I suggesting you wear anything made from hemp grown in the forbidden zone, that being said their auto industry is going to be out of parts soon enough and that industry can use hemp in vast quantities.
Since those reactors are not 'blow-proof' all the remaining ones should be given a blast-blanket (Kevlar strength) made out of, ...... wait for it ...... hemp products made in the dead-zone.
Just like California is reinforcing the freeway support columns with a welded steel outer casing Japan could also do the same using the same hemp material that the auto industry would use.
I suppose I'm pushing the use of hemp as it doesn't seem to be utilized to it's full extent. I feel the same way about phage medicine, it should be used a lot more than it is these days.
Canada also has a lot of peatmoss (as does Russia) if they ever decide to put a layer (1 meter) of new topsoil over the whole area. The only real hurdle is money, the only rule with 'natural disasters' is fix it for as little as possible.
Anyway I hope you are treating the whole thing as being quite serious and the ones with the money have already left ........ for good.
