55 Occupy SF protesters arrested outside Federal Reserve

Police cleared out protestors from in front of the Federal Reserve building overnight, citing not The City’s controversial sit-lie ordinance that police Chief Greg Suhr had threatened to enforce to remove campers, but a state law on “illegal lodging.”

Illegal lodging is part of a California statute for misdemeanor disorderly conduct. Someone “who lodges in any building, structure, vehicle, or place, whether public or private, without the permission of the owner or person entitled to the possession or in control of it” can be arrested.

Phillips said there had been no tents or structures overnight, and that campers were rustled from their sleeping bags, with cops outnumbering demonstrators by about two to one.

“It doesn’t get much more peacefully assembled than a bunch of people cuddled up on the sidewalk,” said Phillips.

During Sunday’s arrests, some police officers were spit on and one officer was pushed by demonstrators, but no one – demonstrators or police – was injured, according to Esparza.

oh come on it was seriously just on the news TODAY and you gotta do that to me.

aside from the fact that you're being a dick some interesting stuff from the article:

1. i didn't realize california had a law against being homeless and

2. see how quickly people get arrested when they protest against an institution with political power (which might point to why the VAST MAJORITY aren't protesting the fed/congress/white house)?

Protesters Arrested At Goldman Sachs HQ?
Zero Hedge
December 12, 2011

But fear not: the arrested are not the firm’s “god’s work-ing” employees; more of the OWS persuasion. From PressTV: “US police have arrested 17 members of the Occupy movement in New York as the nationwide crackdown on the anti-corporatism protesters continues.” When we get additional confirmation of this arrest from US sources, and not-Iranian media, we will update.

And an update:

Protesters entered the atrium of the World Financial Centre, a little more than a block away from Goldman’s 200 West Street building, and were arrested after police instructed them to leave. A NYPD spokesperson could not confirm the number of arrests yet or the charges, just that arrests have in fact been made. One tweeter for the protesters puts the number at 68, and the person manning the Twitter account for #OccupyWallStNYC has been arrested, along with a livestreamer.

Luckily, since none of the protesters can close a Goldman (which is still a Bank Holding Company) checking account, we are confident the story will end here.
